Over the last few decades, Canadians’ weekly shopping has changed. We have been increasingly placing items in our carts and baskets that have originated from distant places that we may have never visited ourselves.
The transportation of food from farm to fork (and often several distribution depots in between) is responsible for the release of tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. Also, as the distance food travels increases, so does the role of chemicals and processing to reduce spoilage before the food reaches the marketplace.... Read more »

Around the world people are growing food in cities! From August 15 to 18, the 2012 Urban Agriculture Summit will bring together a diversity of people that are making it happen - design professionals, community groups, social housing advocates, tenants and developers, educators, planners, homeowners, urban growers and others - to share what is working, and to discover what is possible.
From bee-keeping to community and school gardens; from aquaculture to rooftop farming, urban agriculture is becoming an essential element of food security, improving access to healthy, affordable food in a rapidly urbanizing world. We are just a week away from #BlackOutSpeakOut day (June 4th). I can tell you the campaign momentum is building! The list of participating organizations is over 100 and growing! Maude Barlow just told me The Council of Canadians is also joining the protest. All across the country Canadians are recognizing that silence is not an option in face of the war on nature and democracy.
