John Bennett

John Bennett is a well known and outspoken climate change activist oft quoted in the media. He is in daily contact with environmentalists in Canada and around the world. His long career includes stops at Greenpeace, Climate Action Network and Climateforchange.ca.

John spearheaded SCC’s global warming campaign from 1998 - 2006. In this role he displayed leadership, insight and inventiveness, qualities that will once again benefit the Club as he leads the way forward.

Sierra Club Canada calls for investigation into Climategate

(Ottawa) This morning Sierra Club Canada requested a criminal investigation into Canadian involvement in the theft of private emails from East Anglia University, emails which were subsequently published on at least one Canadian web site.

Sierra Club Canada has identified one such web site believed to be hosted in Canada where the stolen emails are posted, and suspect there may be several more. The request to police cites the Friends of Science, a climate denier group, whose server is based in Calgary and provided by the internet service provider Enmax Envision.

Australia's carbon-trading legislation fails

SYDNEY (AP) ­ Australia's Senate on Wednesday defeated the government's plan to implement a carbon pollution trading system to fight global warming, dashing hopes of setting an example for other nations at U.N. climate change talks next week.

The scuttled proposal would have placed Australia alongside the European Union and a handful of other places that have or are considering "cap-and-trade" systems to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and burnished Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's international reputation as a leader on the issue.
