Elders' wisdom touted in debate over water use

As the world struggles with increasing water problems, governments need to listen to the traditional wisdom of aboriginal people, Grand Chief Ed John, of the First Nations Summit, told an international conference at the University of Victoria yesterday.

ActionH2O seeks to harness a grassroots collective effort to develop new conservation and efficiency-based approaches to water management that are adopted by local governments. This bottom-up effort has HUGE potential to change how water is managed across the whole country! The goal of ActionH2O is to work with 20 cities and towns across Canada over the next 1½ years to identify locally relevant solutions and opportunities for action on water conservation.

Sierra Club Responds to John Baird on Lake Dumping

(Ottawa)  Conservative candidate and Environment Minister John Baird has admitted that if elected he would pursue the environmentally devastating practice of “lake dumping”.  The practice involves allowing mining companies to circumvent environmental protections and use lakes as toxic dumps for mines. Baird made the statement during an all-candidates debate in his riding of Ottawa West – Nepean last night.
