PEI members of the Save our Seas and Shores Coalition (SOSS) are organizing a Quiet Walk for the Protection of the Gulf of St. Lawrence to be held on September 11 in conjunction with a meeting of the federal and provincial Ministers of Energy and Mines at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel, Charlottetown, PEI.

MEET at the Confederation Landing Park Gazebo at 11:30 or JOIN the walk anytime between 11:30 and 1:30 on Water Street between Peake's Quay and the Delta Prince Edward Hotel, where federal and provincial Ministers of Energy will be meeting. We will walk single file on the sidewalk on Water St. to avoid keeping anyone from going about their business.
About five years ago, residents of Yarmouth and surrounding areas joined together and formed the Tricounty Watershed Protection Association to stop the pollution being caused by mink farms at the headwaters of the Meteghan, Sissaboo and Tusket rivers. The Department of Environment conducted water tests in 10 lakes and 75 kilometres of the Tusket River for three consecutive years. The final water test results concluded that the mink farms were the probable cause. The government cancelled further water tests and no action was taken, despite the protests from citizens and environmental groups.
Buried within the more than 400 pages of this spring’s federal omnibus budget bill is an invitation for resource companies to open a new frontier in Canadian oil: the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The gulf, which touches the coastlines of Canada’s five easternmost provinces, is the world’s largest estuary. It’s home to more than 2,000 species of marine wildlife — an ecosystem integral to the health of our Atlantic and Great Lakes fisheries.
Halifax, NS – Sierra Club Atlantic and the Save Our Seas and Shores Coalition are hosting Keep It Blue events next week in Nova Scotia to raise concerns about oil drilling in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The meetings are being held in advance of Open Houses hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore oil and gas regulator.

Think of the beaches of Prince Edward Island, the views from the Cabot Trail, swimming in the warmth the Northumberland Strait, the stunning coast of Gros Morne National Park. Over the past two years, a growing number of individuals, businesses, and governments in Canada and around the world have been rallying against the cruelty and ecological destruction caused by the practice of shark finning. Next Monday, January 28th, all eyes will be on Calgary City Council when they vote on a proposed bylaw to ban the sale, trade and distribution of shark fins in the city. If successful, Calgary will become the largest city in Canada to ban shark fins, and the 18th municipality in Canada to do so.
Thus far, Calgary City Council has shown resolve in moving this bylaw forward, and they have been strongly encouraged to do so by over 11,000 Calgarians who signed petitions to show their support. But Monday is the final vote, and City Council needs to hear your support more than ever.
OTTAWA - Canada announced on Tuesday its latest set of regulations on cars and light trucks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as the UN climate talks entered its second day in Doha, Qatar.
The proposed regulations - expected to be finalized in 2013 - would require cars with model years 2017 to 2025 to cut on-road emissions by an average of 5 percent every year.
Light trucks, with model years 2017 to 2021, will be required to achieve an average of 3.5 percent reduction in annual GHG emissions, and a 5-percent cut for model years 2022 to 2025.
"Compared to 2008 models, vehicles rolling off the line in 2025 will produce almost 50 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions and consume up to 50 percent less fuel," said Environment Minister Peter Kent while announcing the newly proposed regulations at a car dealership.
