    Sierra Club Canada's (SCC) 2011 Annual Report summarizes the year's findings for the National Office,
    Atlantic Chapter, Québec Chapter, Ontario Chapter, Prairie Chapter, British Columbia Chapter,
    and Sierra Youth Coalition.

    The National Office of SCC undertook several campaigns in 2011, focused on educating and empowering the
    public, including:

  • Post-Fukushima, Japan's irradiated fish worry B.C. experts

    Little-known statistics compiled by Japan’s Fisheries Agency have documented persistently high post-Fukushima radiation levels in fish.

     

  • Parti Québécois to shut Gentilly 2 nuclear power plant: spokesperson

    The Parti Québécois will go ahead with its plan to shut the Gentilly 2 nuclear power plant in Bécancour, a party spokesperson said Tuesday.
    It is something the party has wanted since December 2009, Éric Gamache said Tuesday.

    “There is no indication that we will not respect that position,” Gamache told The Gazette.

    He did not say how the party would do it, but noted that it does not require a vote in the National Assembly, where the PQ is in a minority position.

    Gamache made the comments ahead of the premiere Tuesday night of a new documentary about the nuclear power plant called Gentilly or Not To Be. The film, by Montreal filmmakers Guylaine Maroist and Éric Ruel, cites a German studying showing there are higher-than-normal cancer rates among children living in proximity to nuclear power plants.

  • Pickering Nuclear: A Cracking Bad Idea

    Extending the operations of the Pickering Nuclear plant for up to an additional 10 years beyond its designed life of 2014-2016 is a Cracking Bad Idea. This is the position of Sierra Club Canada’s Ontario Chapter as it participates in the current Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s public hearing into the Ontario Power Generation’s application for a renewal of Pickering A and B licenses.  Public hearings begin May 29, 2013 in Pickering, Ontario.

    While OPG is confident that its plan provides the technical basis for the continued operation and eventual decommissioning of Pickering B station, Sierra Club is not.  Importantly, the plan is flawed on many levels.  Leaking old pressure tubes, concrete degradation and a 20 percent increase in collective worker radiation exposure in 2012, are just a few of the issues.

  • Prince Edward Island youth to put on their green thumbs with launch of Sierra Buddies this fall

    Charlottetown, P.E.I– Sierra Club Canada Atlantic Chapter has received support from the TELUS Community Board that will enable them to continue their youth mentorship program, Sierra Buddies, in PEI this fall.

    The Sierra Buddies program guides youth to help make their schools and communities greener, while at the same time preparing them to be future leaders. Students at the Grade 10 level who have been trained and educated about environmental issues and concepts are paired up with Grade 6 students to share and spread their knowledge. 

  • Congratulations Colchester County for stopping the release of Fracking wastewater: NOFRAC

     

    Halifax, NS – Community and environmental groups, members of the Nova Scotia Fracking Resource and Action Coalition, applaud the Municipality of Colchester Municipal Sewer Use Appeal Committee for its decision not to allow the release of fracking wastewater through the Debert sewage system.
